Tues., Feb. 1, 2011 [Box Score][Season Box]
El Cajon, Calif. -- The 21-2 Concordia University Eagles who have slowly climbed through the NAIA top 5 since the start of the season, showed why they sit at the No. 2 ranking on Tuesday night as they had five players finish with double-digit points in the defeat of San Diego Christian College, 91-66.
SDC didn't put up poor numbers, it came down to Concordia continuing to hit shot after shot to nullify the dent SDC would make in their lead. CUI was 19-35 (54.3%) in the first with a high pressure defense and hard working, quick offense. Their speed forced SDC to make poor decisions in the first, resulting in shooting 10-24 and turning the ball over 13 times. Senior Tyler Mutton hit the Hawks lone three for SDC, finishing out the half with 5 points.
The 43-23 lead CUI took into the second slowly increased over the twenty minute period as Eagles Taylor King went 6-6 from the field and 3-3 at the line for 16 points. He would finish with 22 points and three rebounds. SDC showed an improvement from the first, shooting 17 of 33 (51.5%) and 6-10 from three point range, scoring just five points less than CUI in the half. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to make an imprint on the game final score.
Senior Tyler Mutton was 5-10 from the field, 4-6 from the three for 14 points. Junior Benji Arvizu added 13 points (6-10 FG) with two rebounds and 2 assists and Senior Paul Wolf pulled down 7 of SDC's 30 game rebounds.
San Diego Christian makes the trip to Fresno Pacific University on Saturday (Feb. 5) to play the Sunbirds in a 4:00pm match up for their next game.
