El Cajon, Calif. -- The Hawks hard time from downtown and at the free throw line wrote the 71-57 win for the now 6-6 GSAC Concordia University Eagles (11-7, 6-6 GSAC) on Tuesday night.
Two Hawks, senior guard Melissa Villalobos and junior guard Brittany Robinson closed out the night with 13 points a piece. Robinson (4-12 FG, 5-10 FT) also had 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assits to her name.
SDC had the lead for a portion of the opening minutes, but Concordia used their chances at the line to close the small gap and overtake SDC to a short lead half way through the first. The Hawks first half fouls put the Eagles into bonus with nine minutes to go. CUI would hit 12 of 16 free throws, while SDC would see the line 7 times for 6 points on the way to the 35-29 halftime score.
The three point shot, the Hawks bread and butter on most occasions, was 1-8 in the first, with SDC shooting an overall 34.4% from the field. CUI wasn't much better, 10-26, but Nicole Fu's two three's (16.9ppg) helped distance the two teams as they started fresh in the second half.
Concordia owned the boards, especially the offensive, pulling down 10 offensive rebounds, nine between two rebound leaders, Cheyenne Wallace (15 reb) and Karen Carney (13 reb) who average 7.1 and 6.0 rebounds per game respectively. The Hawks cold shooting at the line (13-20) and from three point range (2-12) helped CUI gain the adavantage, despite their improved yet below 50% shooting from the field in the half.
Final numbers had SDC shooting 37.5% (21-56) and CUI 24-59 (40.7%).
