El Cajon, Calif. --
The Lady Hawks (7-13, 2-10 GSAc) pulled in their second GSAC win of the year on Saturday night in a 76-62 win over Hope International University (10-12, 2-10 GSAC). In their last meeting, the Royals pocketed an 87-79 win despite freshman Heather Serven's 26 point night (7-11 3Pt). This time around, the Hawks consistency paid off with 3 players finishing with double-digit point totals.
Junior Brittany Robinson was 6-12 from the field and 2-4 at the line for 15 points, 5 rebounds and an assist. Junior Juanita Lewis also finished with 15 points (4-7 FG, 6-9 FT) four steals and an assist. Freshman Alexa Davison had a team high 7 boards and senior Melissa Villalobos, who added 13 points to the Hawks cause, had 6 assists on the night.
Hope, who usually finds a majority of their points on penetration to the basket, struggled to connect in general. SDC pulled out to a 12-2 lead on forced HIU turnovers and cold shooting. The Royals were 1 of 10 in the first 6 minutes, finding the channels but unable to put the points on the board. Champ Hood, who averages 24.4 points per game was held to a mere 6 points in the first half and ten in the second.
SDC would lead by as many as 13 with the help of Serven's two three's and made free throws, closing the half with a 35-25 lead. They shot 13-26 (46.4%) while HIU's struggles showed through their 6 of 29 shooting (20.7%). Despite their issues from the floor, twelve of their 25 first half points came at the free throw line (12-15).
Hood's presence under the basket brought the Royals back into contention in the second, scoring ten points and five rebounds. She alone had 13 offensive rebounds and 2 defensive during play. The passes from Crystal Vazquez to Hood brought HIU within three at 48-45 with 10:53 to go, but SDC's consistency allowed them to recover and eventually celebrate the 76-62 win.
While HIU's game 29% shooting hung over them, the Hawks were 26-55 from the field and 19 of 27. Hope saw the line 37 times during the game for 24 points.
SDC hosts Concordia University on Tuesday (Feb. 1) night, with tip off scheduled to go at 5:30pm.
