Santa Clarita, Calif. -- San Diego Christian College was hosted by The Master's College Mustangs on Thursday night holding high hopes of avenging their 103-100 loss from their last meeting. But the Mustangs, who sit amidst the meat of the GSAC conference (14-7, 7-5 GSAC), shot 54.5% (30-55) from the field to take the 85-49 win. San Diego Christian dropped to 6-13 overall and 1-10 in conference with the loss.
It was apparent from the tip-off that the Hawks weren't at the top of their game as TMC took off to an 11-0 lead. Juanita Lewis, who finished with 14 points (5-14 FG, 4-6 FT), seven rebounds and four steals, posted SDC's first points around five minutes in. TMC outscored SDC 29-11 in the final 9 minutes of the first half to the 44-19 score, shooting 60.7% (17-28) to SDC's 25.8% (8-31). Not one three was hit by SDC in the first, an unusual streak out of the Hawks go to shot while TMC had 21 of their points come from the three.
Senior Melissa Villalobos has 8 of her 15 points in the , shooting 3-6 from the field with two steals. Lewis was close behind with 7 points, but only two other Hawks had a bucket in the half. Beyond the Hawks two point leaders, four Mustangs had 6 or more points to close out the first.
The wound deepened in the second half as TMC fluctuated between a 23 to 40 point lead. The Hawks struggled to find a rythum still in the second, ending with a 29.3% from the field, hitting 17 of their 58 shots. TMC's Lena Rivera was virtually unstoppable for the Mustangs, shooting 8-9 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the line.
SDC hosts Hope International University on Saturday (Jan. 29) at the Ryan Athletic Center at 5:30pm.
