El Cajon, Calif. -- Eleven turnovers and a mere 4-16 (25%) from the field in the second half caused the Hawks to conceed their at one time twenty point lead over the No. 7 Azusa Pacific University Cougars, 72-67. Azusa Pacific extends their winning streak to thirteen and their overall record to 18-2 with a 9-1 conference record. The Hawks drop to 7-13 overall and 1-9 in GSAC.

The Hawks put up a great battle in the first shooting 63.6% with senior Tyler Mutton (pictured left) marked a threat from the three, hitting 5 in the half, two as a part of the Hawks first points. Mutton had 15 points in the first (5-7 3Pt) with three other Hawks chiming in with 6 points a piece. SDC shot a season high 63.3% from the field and 58.3% from downtown (7-12). APU struggled all around, shooting 39.1% from the field with no three's on nine attempts. Their redeemer for the first was their 70.6% free throw shooting (12-17) keeping them within 15 (45-30) going into the half.

The second half was a complete turnaround for SDC with APU outscoring them with hot shooting (15-30 FG) 42 to 22 and outrebounding them 21 to 10. SDC's lead through 28 minutes of play over the No. 7 Cougars, slipped away from them for good on a clutch three-pointer from Caleb Burgess who would also hit two free throws in the final minute as APU clinched the 72-67 win.

Mutton finished with 22 points (7-11 FG, 6-10 3Pt, 2-4 FT) 4 assists and three rebounds. Not far behind him was senior Jason Starr who was 3-4 from downtown and 5-6 from the line. He also had three rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Final percentages had SDC outshooting APU in all areas, but APU's 24-53 from the field and 20-30 points at the line pushed them toward the win.

SDC heads to The Master's College on Thursday (Jan. 27) for a 7:30pm match up in Santa Clarita for their next game.
