El Cajon, Calif. -- After a strong first half, the Hawks watched No. 8 Azusa Pacific University run off on Saturday afternoon with a 81-65 win. APU extended their win streak to five, boasting a 16-4 overall record and a conference record of 8-2. SDC (6-12, 1-9 GSAC) is left still trying for their second GSAC win of 2011.

Junior Jasmin Thomas (pictured left) capped her night with a season high 25 points (9.6 ppg), hitting 9 of 12 from the field and 6-7 at the line. She also had 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Freshman Jermani Daniels also had a season high 13 rebounds and 9 points (4-5 FG) adding two blocks in the second half.

First half action had APU up 9-4 at the five minute mark. SDC caught APU off their game in the teens, tying the game for the second time at 17-17, but the Cougars used the Hawks comeback to generate a momentum that would put them up by as many as 9, ending the half up 44-36.

Thomas was 6-8 from the floor and 1-1 from behind the arch as the lead contributer to the Hawks 45.2% shooting (14-31). It was an off night for SDC from downtown, only hitting 2 of 11 chances and only 54.5% of their 11 first half free throws. APU was 16-32 from the field with their 11-15 made free throws helping maintain their first half lead.

A mildly sloppy opening to the second half from SDC let the Cougars stretch their lead to 16 five minutes in and to 20 with 7:23 to go. SDC's 32.3% shooting in the second gave them an overal 38.7% shooting from the field. Three Hawks hit three's, but it just wasn't SDC's normal 37% three-point shooting on Saturday. Azusa hit 17 of 23 in the second for a game 51.6% shooting. Eboni Salder finished with 23 points for the Cougars, going 8-12 from the field and 7 of 8 on free throws, all coming in the first. Salder also finished with seven rebounds and five steals.

Azusa out rebounded the Hawks 42-35, in assists 15-6, but did have one more turnover (19-18) than SDC by games end.

SDC plays a Thursday game this week at The Master's College (Jan. 27) starting at 5:30pm in Santa Clarita, California.
