Costa Mesa, Calif. -- In an unfortunate result, Vanguard University now sits above San Diego Christian GSAC standings with the 69-59 win over the Hawks on Tuesday. VU is 4-13 now, with 2 wins and 7 losses in conference. SDC drops to 7-12 overall and a GSAC record of 1-8.
VU took a strong lead on a 17-2 run to 23-10 with 6:35 to go. Soon after, VU had taken a commanding 29-12 lead with the help of 13 SDC turnovers while the Hawks had trouble scoring. The 36-19 halftime score had SDC shooting 36.4% (8-22) from the field and a below average 2 of 7 from the free throw line. Vanguard was 13-35 from the field, also hitting 4 three's and making 6 of 7 from the line.
Vanguard extended their second half lead to 23 at 47-24 with SDC cutting the distance to 7 with an 14-0 run with 8 minutes to go. An exciting period of three point shots from Jason Starr (2) and Tyler Mutton (1) caught the Hawks to within three, but VU snapped the momentum with two free throws at 4:33 and carried a single-digit cushion through to the eventual 69-59 win.
Starr finished with the team high 14 points going 5-6 from the field, sinking 3 of 4 three point attempts. Paul Wolf put up a season high 12 points (6-12 FG) and 8 rebounds by games end. SDC, shooting one of their more accurate percentages of 2011, went 23-48 from the field and 8-18 from downtown. The difference for Vanguard came at the charity stripe where they pulled in 15 points out of 21 chances. VU's point leader in their 43.4% shooting effort (23-53), Alex Chapman was 8-15 and 5-6 from the line for 21 points and 7 rebounds.
SDC takes to the court again on Saturday, January 22 against No. 7 Azusa Pacific University starting at 4:00pm.
