Costa Mesa, Calif. -- The No. 12 Vanguard University Lions hosted San Diego Christian on Tuesday night in their first conference match up of the season, overtaking the Hawks in the final seconds 62-59. Vanguard, with a now 10-5 overall record (6-3 GSAC) just recently slipped out of the top 10. The Hawks drop to 6-11 overall and 1-8 in conference.
After leading for nearly five minutes, SDC pulled ahead of VU 13-12 on one of Jasmin Thomas' 8 first half free throws. The lead exchanged 5 times before SDC hit a cold period with VU hit shots to an 8 point lead at 32-24. Free throw's in the final 2 minutes allowed VU to walk into the half with a 34-30 lead.
The half's 27 fouls (14 SDC, 13 VU) put both Thomas and VU's Boyd at the line for a total of 18 free throws, 29 overall between both teams in the first. Thomas was 6 of 8, while Boyd was 7-10, ending with 11 points. SDC made 8 of their 22 shots from the field with two of three 3-pointers coming from junior Brittany Robinson (14.6 ppg) who had 7 points for the Hawks. VU was 12-29 (41.4%) forcing 10 SDC turnovers for 13 points.
Back to back shots from Heather Serven around 4 minutes in put SDC up by one, with Robinson bumping the lead to two on another three. Serven hit another three at 12:09, continuing the 15-4 run to put SDC up by their largest margin, 45-38. Their lead was short lived as a jumper, 4 free throws and a three put VU up by 1 (49-48) with 6:31 to go.
Despite their 36.4% shooting, VU carried their lead into the final 51 seconds. At that time it seemed as though, freshman Jermani Daniels' 2 clutch free throws would give SDC the 1 point win, but a loose ball foul in the last 37 seconds put VU at the line where 2 made free throws iced it for the Lions.
Turnovers became an issue for SDC in the second accompanied by an overall 17-28 from the free throw line. Both teams saw the charity stripe 28 times by games end with VU hitting two more than SDC. SDC shot 39.1% (18-46), also hitting 6 three's that served as momentum shifters throughout the course of the game.
Robinson ended with 14 points (5-10 FG, 3-6 3Pt) also collecting 5 rebounds. Junior Juanita Lewis had the team high 4 steals and 6 rebounds. Daniels also had 6 rebounds in the effort. Serven ended with 13 points, hitting 2 three's, going 5-12 from the field.
SDC takes to the court again on Saturday, January 22 against No. 8 Azusa Pacific University starting at 2:00pm.
