El Cajon, Calif. -- California Baptist University Lancers (8-8, 2-5 GSAC) swiped the win in the final two minutes from San Diego Christian (7-10, 1-6 GSAC) on Tuesday, 59-56.
Senior Aaron Felix topped the Hawks scoring efforts with 15 points (6-15 FG, 2-6 3Pt) 4 assists and 2 rebounds. Senior Jason Starr was 5-9 from the field and 3-6 from downtown for 13 points.
CBU started out well, going up 8-3 early, but a handful of three's put SDC back in the game at 11-9 with 10:21 to go. Uneventful minutes passed without either team taking charge on the court, but CBU had the upper hand going into the half at 22-19. Neither team shot well in the first, both hovering around 30% from the field. CBU hit 7-13 at the line, helping their cause, while SDC was only 1 of 5 at the charity stripe.
A 12-4 run that started with 11 minutes left in the second (44-36), put the game at its third tie at 48-48. Four ties through the last ten minutes of the second half made for an exciting game as the CBU lead waivered and changed hands near the final five minutes. The tip-in by Ivan Patterson with 1:57 remaining iced the win for the Lancers, as SDC's shooting last ditch efforts were denied by the Lancers.
Final shooting numbers had SDC dipping below 40% (22-57) and CBU, who shot 61.5% in the second, closed out the game shooting 48.9% from the field. Rebounds weren't the Hawks strong suit on the night as well, with CBU pulling down 41 to SDC's 27.
