El Cajon, Calif. -- The second half turn around for the No. 7 California Baptist University Lancers (13-4, 6-1 GSAC) gave the Hawks (6-9, 1-6 GSAC) the short draw on Tuesday night in the 73-63 loss.
CBU, who had come off of two huge wins against NAIA/GSAC teams Azusa Pacific University (No. 8) and Vanguard University (No. 12), came out slow in the first opening the way for SDC to take a 24-13 lead with 11:04 to go. The Hawks rythum was disrupted when V.V. Vasciunaite (20.0 ppg) hit a three that put them on a 10-4 run track to tie the score at 34 by half.
SDC shot 44.8% (13-29) from the field with junior Brittany Robinson scoring 10 points, going 4-8 from the field with 2 three's. Junior Jasmin Thomas was 4-5 for 9 points and 2 steals for the Hawks. CBU hit 12-28 from the floor (42.9%).
A span of turnovers kept the gap CBU created off of the break from going into double-digits, but it wasn't long until SDC's 30% second half shooting began to build. While SDC's shooting went cold, CBU boasted a 58.1% from the field with 28 penetration points coming from Vasciunaite and Renetha Burton, the difference in the game. CBU's height down low helped them out rebound the Hawks 42 to 26, also finding the open man 23 times to SDC's 5.
Senior Melissa Villalobos knocked down 11 points in the half, going 6-7 at the line. She also had 2 rebounds and 4 steals to her name.Thomas finished with 15 points, going 5-7 from the field and 5-6 at the line. In thirty-five minutes she pocketed three assists and three steals as well. Robinson closed out with 14 points, hitting 3-6 from three point land. Both freshman Alexa Davison and junior Juanita Lewis had five rebounds on the night. Lewis also had 4 steals.
