La Mirada, Calif. -- Gaining the early lead, the No. 7 Biola University Eagles handed the Hawks their fourth GSAC loss of the season, 79-61. Biola boasts an 12-3 overall record and a 4-2 record in GSAC. The Hawks are now 1-4 in conference and 6-8 overall.
Biola took the upper hand with 15:32 to go at 8-7, distancing themselves quickly with the help of a few turnovers and the 21% (6-28) shooting from the Hawks. BU was 42% from the field, posting 10 assists off the fast break and in the paint to their 37-21 halftime lead.
Melissa Villalobos was 6-6 from the free throw line, hitting a three as well as collecting 2 steals. Eagle Jessilyn Conicelli had 12 points (16.5ppg) and 10 rebounds (11.0rpg) to lead BU. As a team, BU pulled down a 29 rebounds, 14 offensive, and 24 points in the paint. This season BU has outrebounded their opponents by 8.6 rebounds per game.
BU had built a 57-35 lead just over 8 minutes into the second. SDC knocked down 9 straight points (57-44), but BU continued to inch ahead keeping the Hawks at a double-digit distance through to the 79-61 win.
Villalobos topped out the night at 16 points (4-11 FG, 7-8 FT) 4 steals, 2 rebounds and an assist. Brittany Robinson (5-11 FG) and Juanita Lewis (4-9 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT) both had 11 points, with Robinson also collecting 9 rebounds. SDC improved in the second half, bumping their shooting percentage to 32.8% (21-64) by games end, but BU however, finished shooting 45% (27-60) from the field and 73% from the line (22-30).
Eagles Jennifer French and Conicelli finished with 22 points, while Conicelli also had the game high rebounds with 19, 10 of those coming on the offensive board before fouling out.
SDC hosts California Baptist University on Tuesday (Jan. 11) night at 5:30pm. CBU is currently ranked 17th in NAIA Division I with an 12-4, 5-1 record.
