El Cajon, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene University, who had received votes in the last NAIA national top 25 poll, took the first 2011 GSAC game on Tuesday night, 72-62. The Sea Lions improve to 8-6 overall, 2-3 in GSAC and the Hawks drop to 7-8 overall with a now 1-4 record in the conference.

Three Hawks senior Jason Starr (14), junior Benji Arvizu (13) and senior Tyler Mutton (12) ended in double-digits in the effort with Arvizu shooting 4-6 from the field and 5-5 from the line. PLNU also had three players enter double-digits, with James Hancock going 8-10 from the field and sinking 4 of 4 free throws for 20 points.

It was tight off the tip with PLNU pulling to tie the game three times before the Hawks took control with 13:58 to play on a three by Starr. SDC piggy backed on his lead hitting 6 straight shots to an 11 point lead at 29-18, shooting 50.0% (12-24) from the field and 54.4% (6-11) from the three in the half.

PLNU was hot out of the locker room for 6 straight points, taking the 34-27 halftime score and turning it into a 35-34 lead at the 14 minute mark. They carried that fire for the next 11 minutes, allowing SDC to get within 4 points (61-57) with 2:32 remaining. It looked as if it might turn around for SDC but the Sea Lions exploded out of the Hawks timeout scavenging 7 points in a minute to ice the eventual 72-62 win.

SDC shot 41.5% on the court and tailed off on the three's with only 9 in the game. Mutton had 4 of those three's for the Hawks. Loma ended the night shooting 27-49 from the field.

No. 18 Biola hosts SDC on Saturday, January 8, at 7:30pm in their first of two season match ups. The game can be watched live by visiting the BU Eagles website at: Biola Athletics
