El Cajon, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian Lady Hawks defeated the now 5-7, 1-3 AMC Houghton College (NY) on Saturday in their last nonconference contest, 74-53. The Hawks enter the bulk of their conference games with a 6-6 overall record, looking to tack on more wins to their 1-3 GSAC record in the coming weeks.

Junior Brittany Robinson, averaging 14.6 points per game, put down a double-double scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds (6-12 FG, 4-6 3PT), also pocketing 3 assists. Senior Melissa Villalobos, who is currently ranked 5th in NAIA Division I women's basketball in steals per game, bumped her per game average to 4.0 with 6 steals. She also had 3 assists and a block.

San Diego Christian started off a little shaky, finding the Highlanders ahead 10-7 (14:01) on a jumper from Jennifer Hudson who led HC with 20 points and 3 steals. Junior Michelle Gonzalez's firey play picked up the SDC pace to move past the 12-12 tie. Gonzalez was 3-5 from the field and 1-2 from downtown for 8 points, three rebounds and a steal.

The Hawks welcomed the help of Houghton's 16 first half turnovers, scoring 26 points off the turnover, building a 20 point lead (41-21) that they carried into the locker room.

The first was the better shooting half for the Hawks (17-38, 44.7%), with minimal fouls and 50.0%, 4-8 from the three. Houghton's Ashley Dupler (9.7rpg) had 8 of her game 13 rebounds at half. Houghton shot 37% from the field, hitting 10 of 27 attempts.

The second half had Houghton back within ten after a 16-6 run at 12:34. It looked as if HC was on the road to retaking the lead when the shots started falling again for SDC, carrying them through the remainder of the game with a double-digit lead.

Neither team had overwhelming success at the free throw line with Houghton hitting 9 of their 19 opportunities and SDC only 10 of their 18. Both teams also hovered around the low 40's in shooting percentage. In the end, turnovers and the points SDC bucketed off of those posession changes made the difference.

SDC takes on Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday, Janurary 4 to resume GSAC conference play. The tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm in the Ryan Athletic Center.
