El Cajon, Calif. -- Twelve three-pointer's carried the Hawks to a 77-58 win on Friday against the La Sierra University Golden Eagles (2-9 AII). The Hawks, after the December 28th game against Mount Vernon Nazarene, were ranked 9th in NAIA Division I in three-point shooting with 107 three's and 9th in 3 PT field goal percentage (39.5%).
Senior Tyler Mutton (pictured below) had five three's to his name, Hawk point leader Senior Aaron Felix (pictured left) had 4 and Senior Jason Starr finished the game with two. The Hawks are now 7-7 overall and 1-3 in GSAC.
The Hawks first three from Mutton rang out 7 seconds into the game, followed by three more between Felix and Mutton, bumping the SDC lead to 6 (13-7) with 17:07 to play in the first. SDC racked up 7 team fouls with just under ten minutes to go, putting LSU at the line early. When SDC reached the one-and-one, Felix stepped to the line 6 times, hitting 5 to put the Hawks up by 19. Daveon Woods hit a 3 at the buzzer to take a 44-26 score into the half.
Mutton had 12 points (4-7 3PT) and Felix was 4-4 on three point shooting for 17 points. SDC, who has averaged 12 assists per game thus far, had 11 in the first to LSU's 2. SDC had only 8 points from inside the arch with the remnant of their 44 points coming from downtown (9-14, 64.3%) and the free-throw line (9-12, 75.0%).
Intensity followed LSU onto the court from the locker room, stunning the Hawk offense and cutting their defecit to 10 points by 14:12. Fouls came into play with 8:30 to go sending the Hawks to the line 11 times for 7 points and the eventual 77-58 win.
Felix finished the game with 22 points, hitting 4 of 5 three's, shooting 80% from the line, pulling down 5 rebounds and assisting one basket. Mutton was 5-11 from downtown for 16 points, recording 3 rebounds a steal and an assist. Junior Xavier Mylleville had the rebound high for SDC with 8 and assist high with 3.
SDC shot 43.1% from the field and 52.2% from behind the arch by games end. They also were 21-29 at the line. LSU hit 21 of their 52 attempts on the court (40.4%) with Issaac Waters leading the Golden Eagles with 16 points (7-12 FG, 2-3 3PT).
San Diego Christian resumes GSAC play on Tuesday, Janurary 4 at home against Point Loma Nazarene University at 7:30pm.
