El Cajon, Calif. -- In an exhibition game against the CIS No.8 ranked University of Alberta Pandas (12-7, 10-2 CW), SDC (5-6, 1-3 GSAC) pulled out a 79-65 win with four players finishing in double-digits.
Play was tight and tough throughout the first half with both teams racking up a total of 24 fouls and the Pandas turning the ball over 18 times for 11 Hawk points. Three pointers also contributed to the Hawk lead as they made 7-13 (53.8%) but only shot 28.9% (11-38) from the field. UAB was 41.7% from the field and 11-13 from the line in the first. SDC led by as many as 8, closing out the half with a 35-31 lead.
Freshman Sabrina Jimenez was solid on the court, scoring 10 points (3-3 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT).
The second opened with three Hawk drives that extended their lead to 8 once again. The rest of the half for the Pandas was marked by turnovers (12), points in the paint (30) and personal fouls (14) as SDC closed the game out with a 14 point cushion at 79-65.
Junior Jasmin Thomas had the highs for the Hawks with 15 (5-11 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 3 assists and 3 steals. Freshman Heather Serven was at 14 points, and the scrappy Michelle Gonzalez finished with a team high 5 rebounds. Jimenez finished with 12 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3PT, 2-2 FT).
The Pandas scored 48 of their points in the paint, shooting 46.4% (26-56), but gave up 30 turnovers to SDC's 10 by games end. SDC's 11-24 three point shooting was the difference as the Hawks only shot 35.2% (25-71).
SDC's final nonconference game takes place on Saturday, Janurary 1, 2011 at the Ryan Athletic Center against Houghton College (NY). Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm on New Year's Day.
