El Cajon, Calif. -- San Diego Christian College (6-7, 1-3 GSAC) snagged their 6th win with a 79-52 win over the Ohio based Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University (8-5, 2-0 AMC) on Tuesday night. The Hawks caught the victory in a team effort, recording 17 assists, with 11 of the 17 coming in the first half.
Senior Tim Sanders (pictured left) set a personal high with 17 points (8-13 FG), 8 rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Junior Benji Arvizu also finished with a personal high 16 points going 5-5 from the field and 6-8 at the line. Arvizu also had 6 rebounds, 4 steals and three assists in his 28 minutes on the court. Senior Aaron Felix rounded out the Hawks big three for the night by hitting 5 of 9 three's for 17 points, three assists and two rebounds.
It wasn't the most solid of starts for the Hawks, as Mount Vernon posted their first points right off the tip. SDC hit two of four free throws to tie the game at two, then overstepped a 5-4 Cougar lead to mount a 10-0 run that overshadowed their slow start, also setting the tone for the game. Four Hawks had two assists each to accompany the 48.3% shooting from the field (14-29). Felix was 3-5 from downtown for ten points, while the Cougars shot a 33.3% (8-24) with two players topping out at 6 points. SDC pocketed 8 second chance points, out rebounding MVNU 21-14.
The Hawks continued to build on the first half 15 point lead (39-24), closing out the game with a 27 point margin in their favor. It was a cold night for the Cougars as SDc held their top scorer, Brandon Short (15.5ppg) to only four points in his 25 minutes on the court. MVNU shot 35.8% (19-53) by games end and only 1-17 from behind the arch.
San Diego Christian turns around tomorrow (Dec. 29) to take on the University of Victoria out of Canada for their second to last non conference game of 2010-11. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
