El Cajon, Calif. -- No. 17 William Jewel University (Mo.) edged out the Hawks on Tuesday, 76-69. WJU has won their last 8 games as they sit atop the Heart of America Athletic Conference, with a 3-0 record, 12-1 overall.
WJU's Nick Larson (16.4ppg), who had 19 points and 14 rebounds on the night, posted up in the paint in the early minutes leading them to a 16-7 lead. The score would change three times in the first, but WJU still managed to end the half up by 7, 33-26. Jason Starr had 11 points in the first half effort, hitting 3 of 5 from downtown, with the Hawks only sinking 8 of 23 shots. WJU pulled down an impressive 19 rebounds to SDC's 9, also shooting 52.0% (13-25).
Emotion ran high in the second with double bonus' starting with 9 minutes to go. Around that same time, the Hawks had taken a one point lead on Tyler Mutton's fastbreak points from a Benji Arvizu steal (55-54). The lead teetered for a few points as both teams made free throws, but a three from Mark Mason started a fire under the Cardinals that forced two key turnovers giving WJU a four to nine point cushion through to the games end.
SDC's Starr (pictured above) was hot from behind the arch hitting 5 of 8 for 19 points. Senior's Mutton (3-6 FG, 2-3 3PT, 5-5 FT) Paul Wolf (6-13 FG, 1-1 3PT) and both had 13 points. Wolf also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
SDC was 14-15 from the line in the second, 87% overall (20-23) and 9-18 on three's, but WJU's 52.1% from the field and 22-28 at the line made the difference for the Cardinals in the 76-69 win.
Mount Vernon Nazarene University comes to San Diego Christian on Tuesday, December 28 after the break for a 7:00pm game to resume the 2010-11 season.
