El Cajon, Calif. – Cal State San Bernardino (6-0, 2-0 CCAA) came to El Cajon on Wednesday night to play their final nonconference game against the Hawks (4-5, 1-3 GSAC). SDC looked to put a damper on the Coyotes 5-0 start to their season, but CSUSB powered through to their 6th straight win, 75-53.

SDC is now 2-12 all-time against CSUSB, with current head coach Kevin Baker seeing the Coyotes through each match up.

Junior guard Brittany Robinson topped the point chart for the Hawks with 15 (14.3 ppg), going 4-8 from the field, hitting 6 of 8 free throws, grabbing three rebounds and 2 steals. Freshman Jermani Daniels also brought in double digit points (10) going 4-5 from the field and knocking down both free throws. She also had three rebounds and a steal.

From the get go, CSUSB was on their game, blanking the Hawks for 6 points then pushing that to a 11-2 lead 2:48 into the game on Sabrina Gonzalez first three of the night. Gonzalez would be the games leading scorer with 24 points (9.8 ppg), sinking 9 of 14 shots, and 5-8 from downtown. The Hawks were hard pressed by the Coyote defense leading to them shooting only 30.8% in the first (8-26). Cal State San Bernardino ran off to a 19 point lead with 6:47 to go closing the half out with a 38-29 lead.

Robinson had 10 of the Hawks points (3-4 FG, 1-1 3Pt) while Gonzalez helped the Coyotes shoot 56% from the field in her 17 point half (6-7 FG, 4-5 3Pt).

The second was unfortunately a near mirrored experience of the first half for the Hawks as the Coyotes grew their lead to an eventual 28 point margin with 2:53 to go (73-45). SDC finished shooting 30.2% from the field and 19-22 (86.4%) from the line, a highlight for the night. CSUSB, who hit 26 of their 47 shots (55.3%), also ended with 22 turnovers, one turnover shy of their season high (22).

SDC continues the nonconference play on Friday against Frontier Conference team Rocky Mountain College out of Billings, Montana. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm PST.
