Fullerton, Calif. -- Hope International University snatched the second GSAC contest from the Hawks on Saturday night, 87-79. HIU maintains their near perfect start to the season, improving to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference. SDC's record evens out at 3-3 and an 0-2 standing in GSAc.
Freshman Heather Serven was the story on the Hawks side, draining a career high 26 points, going 7-11 from downtown and 5-6 from the line. She also had 4 rebounds and a steal before reaching her fifth foul in the final minute of play. Junior Brittany Robinson came in behind Serven with 17 points, 3 assists and a rebound, shooting a flawless 5-5 at the line. Senior Melissa Villalobos was 5-10 from the field, hitting 3 three-point shots for 15 points and 6 steals. SDC forced 27 HIU turnovers, giving SDC 14 team steals by games end.
Hope ran the court in the opening minutes, pushing out to a 7-0 lead with SDC's first hoop coming a little over two minutes into the half. The Royals continued to dominate the floor with teammates finding Champ Hood under the basket on numerous occasions. Crystal Vasquez had 8 assists along side Hood's double-double performance.
HIU led by 17 with a minute left in the first, closing it out with a 45-31 lead and three players in double-digits. The Royals shot 5-7 (71%) from downtown, 8-8 from the line and 53% from the field. SDC's numbers in the first put Serven in front with 12 points despite the 34.4% team shooting percentage.
The Hawks recovered a few points to start the second, pulling within 8 at 60-52 on a Robinson three. HIU would again extend their lead to 76-60, but turnovers allowed the Hawks to put 13 points up, bringing the score to 80-73 with 1:29 remaining. Vasquez was 7-8 at the line with of five of those coming in the final minutes to dampen the Hawks momentum just enough to pull out the 87-79 win. Hood led the Royals with 27 points, 10 rebounds and shot an impressive 12-14 inside the key.
