Salt Lake City, Utah -- The 2009 NAIA National Champion Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears in their second game of the Tipoff Classic on Saturday, defeating them 68-59. SDC is now 1-1, while the Bears are 4-1, earning their first loss of the season.
Tyler Mutton did the most damage for the Hawks, posting 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. He was 5-10 from the field, 3-6 from outside the arc and 6-7 from the line. Senior Jason Starr finished with 13 points and junior Xavier Mylleville was 4-6 from the field for 9 points, pullimg down 7 rebounds and had three blocks, five on the weekend.
Rocky Mountain led early on, pulling out to a 16-6 lead with 12:35 to go in the first. But SDC would turn the tables on the Bears by halftime. A Mutton layup jumpstarted a 17-2 run that put the Hawks ahead by 8 with 2:20 remaining. SDC would take a 33-24 lead into the locker room.
SDC was 14-36 (38.9%) from the field to the Bears 28.1%. Thirteen of Mutton's ninteen points came in the first, as he was shooting 100% from the field (5-5, 3-3 3-pt), and 0-1 from the line.
The Hawks led through the entire second half, taking their largest lead of the game (11 pts) on a three-point shot by Tim Sanders with 7:26 to go. It was the Hawks first half efforts that sealed the win for them, as Rocky Mountain and SDC both posted 35 points in the second half. RMC out rebounded the Hawks 49-39, but SDC came out on top in every other catergory.
San Diego Christian returns to El Cajon to host the Hawks Classic, with their first game on November 11 (Thurs.) at 7:30pm versus Holy Names University.
