San Diego Christian College Men's Basketball opened the 2010-11 season with a 79-71 loss in the first overtime against the No. 12 (preseason ranking) ranked Westminster Griffins out of Utah at the Westminster Tipoff Classic on Friday night.
Westminster is the three-time defending Frontier Conference champions and returned 9 players from the team that went 27-6 last season. San Diego Christian is now 0-4 against the Griffins, last playing one another in 2008.
Newcomer Aaron Felix (pictured left), a transfer out of CSU Dominguez Hills, put up twenty points, 4 rebounds and an assist in the debut. Felix hit 4 of 9 three's, going 7-15 from the field. Tim Sanders was 3-for-5 from the field, 3-3 on three point shots and 2-for-3 for 11 points. Sanders recorded 4 assists and 5 rebounds as well.
SDC jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a made three from Tyler Mutton fifteen seconds in. It was a tight game until Jason Starr hit a three 12:54 in to go up 16-13. The Hawks would lead by twelve points with 3:44 remaining, taking a 32-24 lead into the half. SDC shot 48% from the field in the first recording 9 assists. Mutton had 8 points and 5 rebounds in the first, finishing out the game with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Griffins came out of the locker room strong, tying the game at 34. It was another close battle after SDC regained a one point lead on a three from Keenan Patterson. Patterson had one rebound and four assists on the night. Westminster hit a three to retake the lead at 51-49, a lead they would maintain until the final seconds of the half. The 7-1 run started with a made free-throw from Seth Koenig, who was 3-3 from the line. Sanders stepped up to hit the tying three-point shot at the buzzer to take the 64-64 game into overtime.
Westminster took a 70-65 lead with 3:28 remaining in the first five minute overtime. Felix drained a jumper with 55 seconds to bring the Hawks within three, but unfortunately, a three and three free-throws iced the win for the Griffins.
SDC shot 62% from three-point land, hitting 13 of 21, but shot only 60% from the line. Five Griffins finished with double digit point totals and out rebounded the Hawks 43-31.
The Hawks take on Rocky Mountain College at the Tipoff Classic on Saturday, November 6, starting at 3:30pm.
