Santa Barbra, Calif. -- San Diego Christian (8-17, 1-15 GSAC) fell on Saturday night to Westmont College (12-13, 6-10 GSAC), posting 12 team blocks in one of their closer matches, taking the Warriors to 4 sets (25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 20-25).
Lauren Howard led the Hawks in kills, hitting a .333 clip for 12 kills. She also posted 2 block assists, 3 aces and 5 digs. Sigourney Rockmore had 11 kills behind Howard, also recording 2 block assists. The blocking highlights for SDC came from senior Rachel Blair who had three solo blocks, a block assist and 8 kills and Shelby Broberg who had 6 block assists and a solo block. Libero Jessica Brazynetz had 11 digs in the Hawk effort.
SDC finished well in the first set, getting the upper end of the tied scores in the 20's. Having been in the lead from the first serve, SDC had a 6 point lead at 17-11. Westmont then went on a 8-2 run to tie the score at 19. It was tight through the remaning points as the Warriors went up by two at 22-20 on back to back kills. A kill by Rockmore tied the game at 23, fourth tie in 7 plays. Two errors from the Warriors pushed the Hawks to a first set win.
Set two had the Warriors hitting .400, swooping out to a 10-4 lead and a eventual 25-17 win. SDC got 9 kills off, hitting .161 in the second.
SDC's effort to keep Westmont within reach in the third came up short in the final points. Westmont had control through 19-13, when a three point series for the Hawks brought them within three. The Warriors then widened the gap again to 23-18. Rockmore put away a kill to start the 4-point run bringing SDC within one at 23-22, but Westmont nudged the Hawks off for the final two points they needed for the 25-23 win.
Westmont clinched their 12th win in the fourth, pulling away early and maintaining a healthy gap for the 25-20 win.
San Diego Christian comes home for their second to last home match of the year against No. 10 Concordia University on Tuesday (Nov. 2) beginning at 7:00pm.
