Fullerton, Calif. -- San Diego Christian (1-14-1, 0-10 GSAC) closed out their season with a 4-2 loss on Saturday to Hope International University. Hope International (9-8-1, 4-5-1 GSAC) finishes the regular season on an upnote, making the GSAC playoffs for the first time in the school's history.
SDC couldn't put away their chances in the first, scoring their first goal on a successful penalty kick from Cesar Cruz in the 59th minute. At that point, HIU lead 2-1, adding another at the 69th minute mark. SDC looked to be making a comeback when they connected off of Freddy Irigoyen (pictured left) long throw. Brent Oglesby was credited with the header goal that brought the Hawks within 1 with 12 minutes remaning in regulation.
HIU put the insurance goal away on a misguided clearance in the 87th minute, deflating the Hawks chances of tying the game and taking the Royals into overtime.
SDC had thirteen shots to HIU's 14, giving three saves to HIU keeper Tyler Golden. Alex Cozzi had three saves in the net for the Hawks in the second.
Senior Luke Shankula ended his four year career with the Hawks having played in 61 games. He had 6 total goals (2 gm winners) and 1 assist for 13 points.
Cesar Cruz (15 gms) and Brent Oglesby (16 gms) led the Hawks with 2 goals each. Cruz also recorded an assist during the season. Freddy Irigoyen, the Hawks assist leader, finished with 2 assists.
In goal, the Hawks collected 85 saves, giving up 42 goals in 1456 minutes.
