El Cajon, Calif. -- Senior Day at San Diego Christian (1-12-1, 0-8 GSAC) honored the Hawks lone senior, Luke Shankula, who had spent four years with SDC soccer. Unfortunately, the Hawks fell 2-1 to the No. 20 Azusa Pacific University Cougars (13-3-1, 6-2-1 GSAC). Despite the loss, the Hawks had something to celebrate alongside Shankula's four year stint - solid play and a quality goal against a nationally ranked team.
APU played calmly through the middle, avoiding a few over the top ball attacks in the first thanks to their 6-foot back line. But in the 12th minute, APU was knocked off their game when SDC's Frank Zimmerman scored on a diving header in the box on a low cross from Salvador Velazquez. Zimmerman's goal broke the 460 minute stretch of the Hawks holding a lead in a game.
As play continued, it was apparent that the normal APU height advantage was diminished. The Cougars took time to adjust to the wet conditions that last weeks rain left behind while, SDC's low center of gravity kept them on their feet.Once they found their footing, an unfortunate turn of events gave APU their confidence back, tying the game at one in the 25th minute when the referee awarded them a penalty kick.
SDC was antsy on the through ball, finding themselves offside 7 times. APU had ten corner kick and multiple set piece opportunities, but threaded the game winner in the 82nd minute during the flow of play.
SDC's Bojan Maric (pictured above) finished with 12 legitimate saves in goal. Maric kept the Hawks in the game with quick reactions on the Cougars 14 shots on goal (23 shots total).
California Baptist University comes to El Cajon for the Hawks final home game of the season on Wednesday, October 27, starting at 3:00pm.
