El Cajon, Calif. -- Despite the 2-0 loss to Fresno Pacific University on Saturday, the Hawks were encouraged as they put together their best showing of 2010 season. SDC played 65 minutes of comeptitive, high energy soccer only to find that two untimely mistakes would allow the Sunbirds to clinch their fifth GSAC win. SDC is now 1-10-1 overall and 0-6 in conference. Fresno improves to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in GSAC.

Fresno's size was daunting, but SDC's speed and effort from the kickoff put the Hawks even with the Sunbirds. SDC keeper Bojan Maric came up big in the fourth minute on FPU's dangerous one on one opportunity, with a split second reaction save on the six. (Dylan Chavez pictured left)

SDC connected well through the middle during the first half, just shy of a finishing on multiple occasions. They held the 0-0 tie to the half, also not committing a foul in the entire first half, while FPU recorded 12 themselves.

In the 63rd minute, Jordan Abad rocked a shot that FPU keeper Gildardo Villaruel made an leaping save that tipped Abad's shot off the crossbar. FPU cut through the silence in the 65th minute when Gustavo Da Silva put away a misdirected clearance near post for the game winning 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Paul Islas, who had been denied all game by Maric saves, juked a Hawk defender finishing near post to go ahead 2-0.

Maric only had 4 saves, but all four were game saving touches. Villaruel collected 2 saves on the Hawks 8 shots.

The Hawks go to Irvine on Tuesday, October 19, to play Concordia University at 3:00pm.
