El Cajon, Calif. -- It was a tough loss on Saturday for the Hawks (4-7-3, 0-4-2 GSAC), as they fell 3-0 to the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds (5-7-1, 3-3 GSAC). SDC has been unable to put goals away for the last three games.
Possession was fairly equal early on, with SDC having the first opportunity at goal in the second minute on a pass to Hannah Waggoner's feet from Christy James that she touched just wide of the frame.
SDC keeper Katelyn Ogle (pictured left) intercepted a few threatening passes across the face of the goal from FPU's wingers, keeping SDC in the game. Fresno ran wild in the SDC 18-yard box, but couldn't get a shot off through the Hawk defense.
In the second, with the tie still stalled at 0-0, FPU countered after a unsuccessful SDC corner kick, with Jae Slocum sprinting down the left side of the field, chipping a ball cross field to a wide open Jessica Pereschica who took the ball on a bounce, heading it over Garbez at the top of the 18. Three
later, in the 67th minute, Tori Alvarez sent a line drive across the face of the goal from the right side, deflecting off an SDC defender to make it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. Fresno had the momentum after the second goal, allowing SDC little room to move forward with any quality chances.
Continuing with energy, Fresno put away the game on a beautiful connection between Pereschica and Mariah Alvidrez in the Hawks perimeter, produced a shot at the top of the box out of Garbez's reach.
Ogle had two saves in the first and Garbez pulled down 5 saves in the second. Sarah King had 6 saves in the net for the Sunbirds. SDC had 7 of 11 shots on goal.
SDC takes on Concordia University on Tuesday, October 19 at Concordia in Irvine, California. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
