El Cajon, Calif. -- San Diego Christian took a tough 5-0 loss in the non-conference contest on Wednesday against No. 15 CSU San Marcos Cougars whom they had tied 0-0 in last years meeting. The Cougars improve to 7-1-5 overall, while the Hawks fall to 4-6-3 overall, with their GSAC conference record staying at 0-3-2.
CSUSM took advantage of the Hawks slow start, making runs at goal early on. SDC matched the Cougar speed around five minutes in, steering away from panicked clears, but a few lax moments gave the Cougars chances that resulted in two goals within five minutes of eachother.
The first came in the 10th minute from Cougar Shelby Bush on an unassisted goal as she dribbled the length of the SDC half, putting the ball away far post. Minutes later, the first goal momentum propelled Taylor Ziencia's shot that hit off the post, setting up Lauren Johnson's 3rd goal of the year and the 2-0 lead.
CSUSM put their third goal away three minutes into the second, popping a far post header over the reach of keeper Emily Garbez.
With the shut out still in tact for the Cougars, SDC pushed to overcome the 3-0 defecit as well as the confident and agressive Cougar play, only to have Johnson score 2 more goals by games end.
CSUSM outshot the Hawks 20-9, putting 11 shots on frame, giving Garbez 6 saves in the 90 minutes. Kaycee Gunion had 3 saves in the shutout for CSUSM.
SDC plays against Fresno Pacific University on Saturday, October 16 starting at 1:00pm.
