Costa Mesa, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College cross country team competed in the 21st Annual Vanguard Invitational at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa on Saturday, putting their fourth meet of the season under their belt. This was the first meet where the runners would see mostly GSAC competition with a few schools like Pepperdine, William Jessup, and Chapman University also in the mix.
SDC's lone runner for the men, Will Graham, finished 82nd with his second fastest time of the season, 29:09, averaging a 5:52 mile pace. Individually, APU's Abendego Magut won the men's race, running the 8k course in 24:59 and Vanguard had four runners in the top 20, snatching the team competition with 61 points.
Jackilyn Lowry powered the Lady Hawks on the 5k course, running a 20:40, finishing in 62nd place. Katarina Medici, who ran 21:01, came in 72nd out of the 131 scoring runners. Hannah Lettau (21:24) and Adrienne Graham (21:28) came in 85th and 86th respectively, with Asia Graham rounding out the Hawks five runners at 23:58.
Azusa Pacific University's Poppy Lawman earned the No. 1 place with a 17:24 time, leading APU to the first place team finish, as three other Cougars finished in the top 10. Coming in second was PLNU's Breelan Matranga who ran a 17:53 assisting the Sea Lions in their 69 points, second place team finish.
The Hawks run next Saturday, October 16 at Cal State San Marcos with the 5k women's race starting at 8:00am and the men's 8k race at 8:45am.
