El Cajon, Calif. -- Lauren Howard (pictured left) posts 16 kills, hitting .364 with four errors on 33 attempts, 6 digs and one ace in the Hawks (8-10, 1-8 GSAC) 3-1 (15-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-25) loss to No. 3 Biola University (16-4, 8-1 GSAC).
Sophomore Kim McCalmont followed Howard with 9 kills and 8 digs. Freshman Shelby Broberg had 2 solo blocks and a block assist and Sophomore Rachel Allen had 22 assists, 8 digs and 2 aces for the Hawks.
SDC came out swinging, looking past the single digit ranking attached to Biola's name. They built off of a series of kills by six different Hawks, taking an 8-7 lead early. SDC would hang with the Eagles for a few more points to 13-14, then lost grip as BU went on a 11-3 run to win out the set, hitting .500.
In set two, SDC nearly broke into the .300 range, recording 17 kills to BU's 8. BU took a 6-1 lead with the help of two blocks from Rachel Buckley and Christine Douglas who topped out the Eagles blocking leaders for the night. SDC regained ground on two serve series from Lauren Howard and Rachel Allen that yielded ten points, building the 11-7 lead. This was the first and only time the Hawks would maintain the lead they'd built against the Eagles. BU struggled to compete with the heightened Hawk energy as McCalmont and Howard finished out the set with 11 kills between them.
Biola ran with the next two sets, opening small leads then capitalizing on the opportunities presented to them to finish out the win. In the third, the Eagles benefitted from a mix of kills and SDC errors. In the fourth, timely back-to-back built the BU lead. The Eagles out hit the Hawks .353 to .182 in the fourth.
Vanguard University hosts SDC on Saturday, October 9. First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm.
