Hope International University (5-7, 2-6 GSAC) put the Hawks away in three games on Saturday night, 26-24, 25-13, 25-18. The Hawks are now 8-9 overall with a 1-7 record in conference.
Rachel Allen and Lauren Howard led the Hawks in kills with 7. Howard also recorded 6 digs and 2 block assists and Allen 14 assists. Valaree Bergmann had 7 of the Hawks 18 block assists. Stephanie Rice led the team with 13 digs and Kim McCalmont had 4 aces, 6 digs and two block assists on the night.
The first set, the lead was evenly held by both Hope and SDC, with Hope leading out of the gate. SDC gained their first significant lead starting with a kill by Allen, the Hawks kill leader for the night. SDC would keep Hope at bay by at least one point, until 19-19. Two consecutive blocks by Valaree Bergmann partnered with Sigourney Rockmore and Rachel Blair, SDC tied the score at 23. The Hawks would go ahead by one on a Allen kill, but would give up the next three points on attack errors, giving Hope the first set win.
Hope exploded to a 18-8 lead in the second on the tail end of a streak of six serves from HIU's Libero Jocelyn Moya. The Hawks wouldn't move far, hitting .087 to HIU's .296.
In the third set, SDC searched for a spark, but couldn't find it among the three consecutive kills from HIU's kill leader Naomi Iosia. Hope kept a small lead through the early points, with SDC tying it up at 11 on a McCalmont kill. The Royals pulled out a 9-2 run to go up 20-12, propelling them to the 25-18 set win and match win.
SDC hosts No. 25 Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday, October 5. First serve is at 7:00pm.
