El Cajon, Calif. --Entering the day only one game out of the final GSAC tournament spot, the San Diego Christian College Hawks split a doubleheader against Vanguard University on Thursday. The Hawks won game one 5-4 and dropped the night cap 14-5.

SDCC moves to 18-27 (10-16) while VU goes to 19-18 (9-16) with the split.

The Hawks are ½ game behind Westmont College for the sixth and final spot in the GSAC tournament. Westmont fell to Azusa Pacific 4-2 on Thursday.

In game one, The Hawks fell behind early, with the Lions scoring on a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning. SDCC responded to tie the game in the third, when Victor Martinez doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Jeff Lusardi single.

VU retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning, only to see SDCC jump ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.

After an initial out, three consecutive singles from Alex Mann, Tyler Bailey, and Sean Sweeney brought home a run. After a strikeout, Lusardi singled to drive in his second run of the game and put SDCC in front 3-2.

VU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to move back in front 4-3 and held the lead until the top of the seventh.

Lusardi led off the SDCC seventh with a double, followed by Dawson Jones drawing a walk. After Josh Fernandez was inserted to run for Jones, Chris Pascual successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third. Jesus Castellanos then delivered a two RBI single to give the Hawks the lead for good.

Adair Robles shut down the Lions' bats in the seventh and eighth, and Luis Rivas closed out the game for his first save of the season.

Robles (5-6) allowed four runs on only five hits, while walking five and striking out three in 8.0 innings of work.

Lusardi was 3-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. In addition, Martinez added a pair of hits in game one.

SDCC jumped up quickly in game two, with three runs in the top of the first. The Lions used two big innings to build a commanding lead in the seven inning affair. VU scored five runs in the first and eight in the fifth to cruise to a 14-5 win.
