Hawks Split with #23 CSU San Marcos

El Cajon, Calif. --The San Diego Christian College baseball team split a double header from #23 Cal State San Marcos on Friday. The Hawks won game one 5-3 and dropped the nightcap 7-6.

SDCC moves to 16-21 overall and CSUSM goes to 20-12.

SDCC used solid pitching from starter Garrison McLagan in game one. McLagan collected his first win of the season, throwing six innings, scattering five hits, and allowing three runs while striking out six. Luis Rivas (pictured left) earned his first save of the season, throwing a nearly perfect three innings, allowing only one baserunner and striking out two.

SDCC grabbed the lead early, when Dawson Jones launched a solo homerun (his second of the season ) in the top of the third to put SDCC up 1-0. The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs.

The Hawks recaptured the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Victor Martinez doubled to lead off the inning. After an out, Nick Bando doubled to drive in Martinez. Jesus Castellanos and Tyler Bailey had consecutive singles and Dawson Jones doubled to plate Bando and Castellanos and give SDCC the lead for good.

The Hawks added one more in the top of the ninth and captured game one 5-3.

Martinez was 4-5 to lead SDCC offensively. Bailey, Jones, and Bando had two hits each.

In game two, the Hawks grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Bailey walked to lead the game off. After an out, Martinez doubled to drive in Bailey and Bando promptly singled to bring home Martinez.

CSUSM scored a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the second off of SDCC starter Brock Heerdt.

The Hawks took a commanding lead in the top of the fifth. SDCC pounded out six hits in the inning, scoring four runs to move ahead 6-2.

The Cougars struck back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and held off SDCC in the top of the seventh to win game two 7-6.

Martinez was 2-4 in game two while Bando and Castellanos had a pair of RBIs each in game two.

SDCC travels to Cal State San Marcos for another double header on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
