El Cajon, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College baseball overcame an 8-3 deficit by exploding for 8 runs in a two inning stretch to capture game one, 11-8 over the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on Thursday afternoon. FPU took the night cap 5-1 for the doubleheader split.
SDCC is now 13-19 overall and 8-10 in the GSAC. FPU is 16-13 overall and 7-9 in the GSAC.
After FPU scored first in the top of the second, SDCC responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Chris Pascual (pictured left) singled to lead off the inning for SDCC. After a strikeout, Alex Mann singled and Pascual moved to second. After another out, Jeff Lusardi drew a walk and Sean Sweeney tapped a soft groundball to the shortstop, who was unable to complete the throw and pulled the first basemen off the bag. Victor Martinez capped off the SDCC scoring when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
FPU tied the game up in the top of the third, but SDCC responded when Nick Bando walked to lead off the inning. Pascual then doubled to drive in courtesy runner Cedric Bogan from first to put SDCC back in front 3-2.
After neither team scored in the fourth, FPU chased SDCC starter Lucas Whitmore from the game with a six hit, five run fifth inning to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The Sunbirds tacked on another run in the sixth to push the advantage to 8-3.
The Hawks then took control of the game in the bottom of the sixth by taking advantage of FPU miscues.
After an initial out in the inning, Robert Aguirre walked. After another out, Sweeney drew a walk and Martinez hammered a 1-0 fastball to the right centerfield wall for a triple to clear the bases. Jesus Castellanos then drew a walk to chase FPU starting pitcher Matt Mazzoni from the game. After the new pitcher came in, Bando had an infield single to drive in Martinez to set the plate for Pascual. On an 0-1 breaking ball, Pascual smashed a homerun over the left field wall to put SDCC in front 9-8.
The Hawks added two more runs in the seventh, when Lusardi doubled to deep centerfield. Josh Fernandez came into run for Lusardi, and was brought home on a Sweeney single. Sweeney then scored on an error by the right fielder on a ball hit by Martinez.
Luis Rivas (2-0) came in to pitch in relief of Whitmore, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing one run on one hit.
Jeremy Blare threw a perfect ninth to collect his second save of the season.
SDCC pounded out 11 hits, led by Pascual’s 3-4 game. Pascual added 4 RBIs and scored 2 runs. Martinez was 2-3 with 3 RBIs while Mann and Lusardi added two hits each.
In game two, FPU pitcher Derek Benny shut down the SDCC offense. The Hawks only managed three hits in the 5-1 loss. Martinez had an RBI triple in the sixth to drive in Lusardi, who had walked.
SDCC’s Calvin Chambers (0-1) suffered the loss. Chambers allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, striking out 7 over 5.1 innings of work.
SDCC travels to Fresno to play the Sunbirds in a double header for the final time before FPU moves to NCAA Division II next season. First pitch is scheduled to 11:00am.
