Santa Barbara, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College Hawks rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning of game two to take an 8-7 victory and salvage a double header split with the Westmont Warriors after dropping game one. SDCC won the season series after sweeping two games at home against WC last week.

The Hawks move to 12-18 (7-9 in GSAC) with the victory. The Warriors fall to 14-15-1 (7-9 in GSAC) with the loss.

Westmont came out swinging in game one, pounding out 17 hits en route to a 14-0 win. SDCC only managed three hits in game one.

Game two looked to be headed the way of game one, as WC jumped on SDCC pitcher Brock Heerdt for three runs in the first inning to grab a quick 3-0 lead.

The Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second, when Nick Bando (pictured left) singled to lead off the inning. Jesus Castellanos then sacrificed Cedric Bogan (courtesy running for Bando) to second base. Chris Pascual singled to advance Bogan to third and Garrison McLagan singled to drive in Bogan and advance Pascual to third. Luis Rivas plated Bogan on a sacrifice fly to cut the WC lead to 3-2.

After WC scored another run in the bottom of the second, SDCC tied the score in the fourth. Jeff Lusardi and Victor Martinez hit back to back singles to lead off the inning. Bando then reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases. Castellanos singled to drive in Lusardi, and McLagan drove in Martinez with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the third.

The Warriors took the lead again with another run in the bottom of the third to move ahead 5-4.

The Hawks came back yet again in the top of the fourth, when Tyler Bailey doubled to lead off the inning. Sean Sweeney then moved Bailey over to third with a groundout to second base, and Lusardi drove Bailey in with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at 5-5.

WC scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth to move ahead 7-5 and the Warriors held that lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Down to their final three outs, SDCC rallied to capture the lead. After an initial out in the top of the seventh, Martinez and Bando singled. Castellanos then hammered a 1-1 pitch down the leftfield line to score both Martinez and Bando to tie the game at 7-7. Pascual then singled to advance Castellanos to third. After McLagan drew a walk to load the bases, Luis Rivas hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Castellanos to give SDCC an 8-7 lead.

SDCC’s Lucas Whitmore came in to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Jeremy Blare collected the win in relief of Heerdt. Blare (3-1) threw 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out four and scattering three hits. Whitmore earned his first save of the season.

The Hawks pounded 13 hits in game two, led by Bando’s 3-4 game. Castellanos was 2-3 with 3 RBIs, Martinez was 2-4 with 2 runs, and Pascual was 2-4.

The Hawks continue GSAC play with a four game series against Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds visit SDCC on Thursday, March 22nd for a doubleheader starting at 12:00pm.
