El Cajon, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College Hawks saw a lead slip away in the top of the eighth, only to rally with a four run bottom of the eighth to take a 9-6 victory over the Westmont Warriors on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks move to 11-17 (6-8 in GSAC) with the victory. The Warriors fall to 13-14-1 (6-8 in GSAC) with the loss.

The Hawks captured a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, when Victor Martinez was hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Jesus Castellanos promptly singled to left field to drive in Martinez to give SDCC the lead.

Westmont tied the game in the top of the fifth when an error allowed the Warriors to score an unearned run off of SDCC starting pitcher Adair Robles.

The Hawks responded with a solo homerun from Chris Pascual (pictured left) in the bottom of the fifth to recapture the lead 2-1.

SDCC added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Martinez and Jeff Lusardi drilled back-to-back homeruns over the right field wall on consecutive pitches to push the SDCC advantage to 4-1.

SDCC took the 4-1 lead into the eighth, where the Westmont bats came alive. The Warriors tagged SDCC’s go-to reliever Jeremy Blare for five runs to take a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.

SDCC, however, refused to go away. With one out, Lusardi drew a walk and Dylan Jones pinch ran for Lusardi. Jones stole second base and Castellanos walked. Following by a strikeout, Pascual then singled off the third baseman’s glove to load the bases. Garrison McLagan drew a walk to tie the game, and Dawson Jones delivered a two RBI single to drive in Castellanos and Pascual. Alex Mann finished off the SDCC scoring with an RBI single to plate McLagan and give the Hawks a 9-6 lead.

Luis Rivas (1-0), who came into pitch with two outs in the eighth, finished off the Warriors in the top of the ninth to earn his first win of the season.

Pascual led the Hawks, going 3-4 with three runs and one RBI. Mann was 2-4 with a pair of RBIs. Pascual, Martinez, and Lusardi each had solo homeruns for SDCC.

Robles threw well, going 6.2 innings, allowing only three hits, giving up one run (none earned), and striking out three.

SDCC finishes off the four game series with the Warriors on Tuesday, March 20th, starting at noon. The doubleheader, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to the impending rain.
