Santa Clarita, Calif. --The San Diego Christian College baseball team’s bats came alive late in game one of a double header split against The Master’s College on Saturday. The Hawks rolled out four runs in the sixth and four in the seventh en route to a 9-4 win. SDCC dropped game two 11-1.
SDCC moves to to 9-17 (4-8) while TMC goes to 20-6 (9-3) with the split.
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the first, when Sean Sweeney drew a walk and stole second base. After Jeff Lusardi moved him to third on a groundout, Victor Martinez singled up the middle to drive in Sweeney.
TMC was able to get a run in the top of the second and three runs in the top of the fourth on a three run homerun from Bryan Lucas.
With the Mustangs leading 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Martinez struck out and reached first on a wild pitch. After a walk to Garrison McLagan, Nick Bando grounded into a fielder’s choice, putting runners on the corners with one out. Jesus Castellanos then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to send Martinez home.
Alex Mann was then hit by the pitch, moving Bando to second base. Pinch hitter Chris Pascual and Dylan Jones hit back to back singles to drive in Bando and Mann. After a wild pitch, Sweeney singled to drive in Pascual and Jones was gunned down at the plate to end the inning. Before the dust had settled, SDCC had plated four runs and claimed a 5-4 lead.
The scoring was not done there for SDCC. In the bottom of the seventh, Lusardi singled to lead off and was replaced on the base paths by Tyler Bailey. Martinez then nailed an 0-2 fastball to the left centerfield wall to drive in the speedy Bailey. After an out, Bando doubled to pick up Martinez. Castellanos then moved Bando to third on a groundball to second base and Mann was hit by the pitch. Robert Aguirre followed up with a singled down the left field line, driving in Bando. To cap off the SDCC scoring, Jones singled to left field to score Mann, giving the Hawks a 9-4 lead.
The runs would be more than enough for the Hawks pitching staff, as Adair Robles (pictured left) threw seven innings, striking out eight, and scattering seven hits. Robles (3-4) did not walk anyone.
The Hawks were able to tag TMC starter Charlie Gillies with five earned runs over six innings of work. Gillies came into the game with a 0.96 ERA in seven starts on the season, including three complete games.
SDCC pounded out 13 hits in game one, led by a 3-4 game from Jones. Sweeney, Martinez, and Bando had two hits each.
In game two, TMC jumped on the Hawks with five unearned runs in the second inning. Three walks, a hit batsman, and an error really hurt the Hawks as the Mustangs were able to score five runs on only two hits.
SDCC got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, when Jones singled and scored on a Sweeney double.
TMC finally got to SDCC relief pitcher Calvin Chambers in the ninth inning, after Chambers relieved starter Nick Bando in the second inning. Chambers threw 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit until the Mustangs exploded for six runs on six hits in the top of the ninth to grab the 11-1 victory.
Sweeney was 3-5 in game two, with the team’s lone RBI. Bando and Castellanos had two hits each.
SDCC hosts Westmont College on Thursday, March 15th. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
