The San Diego Christian College baseball team could not complete a comeback against The Master’s College Thursday afternoon. SDCC struggled offensively in game one. After a Jeff Lusardi single in the first, the Hawks did not have a base runner again until the sixth when Sean Sweeney doubled, a span of 13 hitters. TMC’s starting pitcher AJ Work limited the Hawks to only those two hits in seven innings of work.
SDCC’s Lucas Whitmore (2-3) gave up two runs in the first, two runs in the fourth, and three runs in the sixth to take the loss.
The Hawks did get on the board in the ninth, when Sweeney and Lusardi singled. Sweeney scored on an error and Cedric Bogan (running for Lusardi), scored on a Garrison McLagan single.
Sweeney and Lusardi were both 2-4 in game one.
Game two saw SDCC fall behind 4-0 after allowing two runs in the first and two runs in the third.
The Hawks’ bats came alive in the sixth. Tyler Bailey doubled to lead off the inning and Lusardi singled, advancing Bailey to third. Jesus Castellanos then singled to drive in Bailey. Victor Martinez (pictured left) then cleared the bases with a three run homerun over the right field wall to tie the game at 4-4.
SDCC had base runners in the seventh and ninth, but were unable to scratch across a run.
TMC ended the game in the bottom of the ninth, when Tanner Leighton tripled to deep left and scored when the throw from the cutoff man deflected off Leighton sliding into third, and went into the dugout.
Jeremy Blare (2-1) suffered the loss in relief of starter Garrison McLagan.
The Hawks outhit the Mustangs 13-7, including a 3-4 game from Lusardi. Martinez, Alex Mann, and Gary Foster had two hits each for SDCC.
