The San Diego Christian College baseball team shook off a 10-0 game one loss to take the night cap 7-4 from Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday. The Hawks and Sea Lions split their season series 2-2.
SDCC moves to 8-14 (3-5) while PLNU goes to 10-11 (3-5) with the split. The eight wins for SDCC matches last season’s win total.
Game one was not kind to the Hawks, as starting pitcher Adair Robles (2-4) continued to struggle with blister problems and was knocked out of the game after three innings of work, surrendering seven runs. SDCC’s offense never got on track, as Alex Mann and Tyler Bailey recorded the Hawks only two hits in the game.
“It was a tough loss the first game,” said Sweeney. “We didn’t play as well as we should have but it shows a lot to be able to bounce back and take game two.”
In the night cap, the Sea Lions jumped on the board in the bottom of the first, when starting pitcher Brock Heerdt (pictured left) gave up a single and double as PLNU went up 1-0.
SDCC took the lead in the top of the fifth, when Mann walked and scored on a base hit from Robert Aguirre. After an error allowed Robert Aguirre to take second base, brother Richard Aguirre moved Robert over with a sacrifice bunt. Sean Sweeney then drove Aguirre in on a sacrifice fly to put SDCC up 2-1. Heerdt had found his groove and held the Sea Lions scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. PLNU answered SDCC’s scoring with one run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, SDCC exploded with five runs to take a commanding lead. After an initial out, Garrison McLagan and Nick Bando drew back to back walks. Luis Rivas then doubled to drive in McLagan, followed by singles from Mann and Robert Aguirre to score Bando and Rivas. After a second out, Sweeney doubled to bring in Mann and Aguirre and SDCC had claimed a 7-2 lead.
“My approach, when I step into the box, is to think up the middle and hit what the pitcher is giving me,” said Sweeney of his double. “I wanted to be aggressive and got a pitch to drive.”
PLNU pushed across single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but never threatened the lead and SDCC captured the 7-4 win.
Sweeney was 2-4 with 3 RBIs in game two, while Robert Aguirre was 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and 2 RBIs.
Heerdt (2-1) was on target, throwing eight innings and scattering nine hits while allowing three runs. Heerdt also struck out three and only walked one.
The split keeps SDCC in the middle of the pack in the GSAC standings.
“There are things we need to fine tune, but I think we are coming together well as a team,” added Sweeney. “We are doing it for each other and ultimately for God.”
SDCC heads to The Master’s College on Thursday, March 8th for a double header against the Mustangs. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00am.
