The San Diego Christian College baseball team split a double header with the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions on Friday, taking game one 7-5 and dropping game two 13-4.
SDCC moves to 7-13 (2-4) while PLNU goes to 9-10 (2-4) with the split.
Lucas Whitmore (2-2) pitched the Hawks to victory in game one, throwing his third complete game of the season. Whitmore allowed five runs, scattering eleven hits and striking out four.
The Sea Lions captured a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but Whitmore shut down the PLNU attack the rest of the game.
SDCC chipped away at the PLNU lead with single runs in the second through fifth innings. In the second inning, the Hawks manufactured a run when Alex Mann struck out but advanced to first on a wild pitch. Mann then advanced to second on another wild pitch. Robert Aguirre then doubled to drive in Mann. Sean Sweeney then drilled solo homerun over the left field wall in the third. In the fourth, Mann singled and scored on a Luis Rivas double. In the fifth, Nick Bando hit an opposite field homerun to tie the game at 4-4. Finally, Rivas doubled and was driven in on a Victor Martinez single in the seventh to give SDCC the 5-4 lead.
The Hawks picked up some insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Jeff Lusardi singled with one out and SDCC inserted Cedric Bogan as a pinch runner. Dylan Jones then doubled and Bogan advanced to third. After a strikeout and an intentional walk to Bando, Chris Pascual delivered a two RBI single to push SDCC in front 7-4.
PLNU’s Brian Burkhead hit a one out solo homerun in the top of the ninth, but Whitmore retired the next two Sea Lions to end the game.
SDCC pounded out 15 hits, as Lusardi, Martinez, Bando, Mann, and Rivas had two hits each.
In game two, PLNU took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but SDCC responded with a run in the second and third innings. In the second, courtesy runner Tyler Bailey scored on an RBI single from Pascual and in the third, pinch runner KC Lee scored on an RBI single from Bando.
PLNU scored in each of the next three innings to blow the game open and take the game 13-4.
Lusardi, Pascual, and Jones each had two hits for SDCC in game two.
SDCC heads to Point Loma on Saturday for a double header against the Sea Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00am.
