Finding SDCC-SCS content using Google Scholar - Part 2

(Books and Libraries, Google, Internet Search Engines, Library Research) Permanent link

In the last Google Scholar post, we discussed finding the full text of a periodical citation by setting the Preferences to highlight SDCC/SCS periodical holdings.  Essentially, you are using Google Scholar as a periodical index.

Today, I'm going to show you how to locate the libraries that own the books in a Google Scholar result list.  Here, we are using Google Scholar like a library catalog.

Go to Google Scholar <http://scholar.google.com> and type in Christian Worldview.  In the results list, a book is identified before the title by the prefix [BOOK]

[BOOK] Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview
JP Moreland, WL Craig - 2003 - books.google.com
Cited by 19 - Related articles - Web Search - Library Search

At the bottom of the citation look for the Library Search link.  This searches for the book in WorldCat.  WorldCat lists the libraries that own the item, including San Diego Christian College.  You can enter your location information, like city, state or zipcode and WorldCat will tell you how far (in miles) you are from the nearest library.

Part 3 will discuss Google Scholar's Advance Search.

Finding SDCC-SCS content using Google Scholar - Part 1

(Google, Internet Search Engines, Library Research, Research Databases) Permanent link

Did you know that when you search Google Scholar you can set your preferences to highlight SDCC/SCS periodical holdings?

Go to Google Scholar <http://scholar.google.com> and click on Scholar Preferences (option to the right of the Search Box).  At the Library Links section, type in San Diego Christian College.  From the results list, checkmark San Diego Christian College - Full-Text @ SDCC Library.  Open WorldCat - Library Search should already be checkmarked.  Click on the Save Preferences button (upper right).

Now, let's try this out...

Back at the Google Scholar search screen, type in Global Warming.  In the results list you will see - Full-Text @ SDCC Library at the end of some of the article titles.  This is linked to the library's ArticleLinker (which provides access to full text between different databases).  You will need to use your student network login & password.  If it doesn't open the article to the full text, look for the ArticleLinker banner at the top of the screen with Missing article? Need more sources? Get additional resources related to this.  This will take you to the Periodicals Directory page which will link you to the full text (you might have to login again) in the databases.

Part 2 will discuss finding books listed in Google Scholar.
